Waaipoort Farm is an initiative of the registered NPC Sustainable Community Development (Registration number: 2002/000195/08).
The farm is located outside the village of Rosendal/Mautse in the Eastern Free State of South Africa.
The Permaculture Research Institute will serve as a best-practice model of intelligent life in this Biosphere.
The intention is to become co-designer of an alternative food-network and one that:
  • Slows and mitigates climate change,
  • Works with available, non-extractive water resources to re-hydrate landscapes,
  • Reduces carbon consumption,
  • Builds more structural resilience through plant, animal and microbial diversity to buffer us from catastrophic events,
  • Re-localizes food production, processing, distribution and consumption on a culturally responsive scale and
  • Empowers people from all cultures and livelihoods to actively and passionately participate in community-based processes and policy changes that build toward true food democracy and climate justice.

The whole farm is designed according to Permaculture principles and developed along these lines.
More than 40 % of the farm is dedicated to 'wild' nature and will only be worked in areas where erosion and encroachment of invasive vegetation is an issue and re-afforested with native vegetation.

40% of the property is dedicated for the bio-dynamic/regenerative agriculture (Agro-ecology) and cultivated mixed forestry.
5% of the property is allocated for members' dwellings.
The rest of the property is allocated for the following buildings:
  • Communal buildings with administration, including library, media & IT hub
  • The Academy for Permaculture and regenerative agriculture
  • Agricultural buildings & workshops
  • Accommodation for volunteers, students and guests.
All of the infrastructure and the landscape is designed with land art and geomancy in mind and forms the basis of the wellbeing of all that live and work here and those who visit.
All new buildings will be designed strictly according to solar architecture principles and built with natural building materials, preferably found in and around the area.

The human community of this initiative consists of permanent members, volunteers and students. There is also a possibility for 8 founders to buy a share of the farm, who see the value in this initiative  and want to support it substantially.
