Effective Microorganisms is a natural technology working with a mixed culture of probiotic beneficial microorganisms (primarily photosynthetic and lactic acid bacteria, yeast, actinomycetes and fermenting fungi) that can be applied as an inoculant to increase the microbial diversity of many environments.

The concept of inoculating with beneficial microorganisms to create more favourable microbial environments has been discussed and researched for decades by scientists.
However, the technology behind the concept of Effective Microorganisms (EM™) and its practical application was developed by Professor Teruo Higa at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan in the 1980’s.
Professor Higa has devoted much of his scientific career to isolating and selecting different microorganisms
for developing beneficial effects initially on soils and plants (later for animals, humans and general environmental . He has found microorganisms that can coexist in mixed cultures and are physiologically compatible with one another.
When these cultures are introduced into the natural environment, their individual beneficial effects are greatly magnified in a synergistic fashion.

All EM cultures are produced through natural fermentation processes and do not contain any genetically modified microorganisms. EM is made up of mixed cultures of microbial species, both aerobic and anaerobic that are mutually compatible and that are found in natural environments worldwide.
The microorganisms in EM produce bioactive substances, powerful antioxidants, vitamins, hormones, enzymes, amino acids and antibiotics, which enrich and detoxify the environments it is introduced into.

Some of the beneficial influences of EM are:
  • Human use (as a probiotic, internal and external use)
  • Agriculture uses (Crops, Vegetables, Fruits, Green House, Orchards, Livestock, etc.)
  • Municipal Waste Treatment (Smell control, Solid waste, garbage, etc.)
  • Sewage Waste Treatment (Smell control, Wastewater, wastewater treatment plants, sewer systems, Septic systems applications, on-site systems, holding tanks, recreational vehicles, boats, and portable restrooms, lagoons, pond systems, etc.)
  • Industrial Waste Treatment (Toxic waste from Leather Tanneries, Textile Mills, Oil Refineries, etc.)
  • Construction (Reduction of harmful VOC’s in Buildings, etc.)
  • Corrosion (Marine oil pipes, concretes, saline/sodic soils, brackish water, etc.)

The basic philosophy of EM is to make it affordable for everybody to grow healthy food. It is thus, that we recommend that you learn how to make the various EM preparations for yourself and only purchase the Stock EM™ from us. However for smaller users and people not wanting to spend the time doing this, we can also supply the various preparations as listed alongside.
